Jesus took a Little Break
Pastor Justin Wells
"Can I just tell you that you can be in the will of God and still have trouble."
“Because the storm was never greater than the One who was in the boat.”
Luke 8:22–25
Key Points:
What is a storm? A series of disturbance in any element of nature.
In Luke we see a day where Jesus just took a little time off. He wasn’t sick, wasn’t quitting, wasn’t leaving, nor was he abandoning the disciples. Jesus just went to sleep.
While Jesus is fully God, he is also fully man which means he gets hungry and tired just like us.
The disciples had already witnessed many mighty miracles:
Jesus casts out an unclean spirit.
Peter’s mother-in-law is healed.
Jesus heals many sick people and casts out devils.
The miraculous catch of fish.
The man sick with palsy is healed.
The man with the withered hand is healed.
Jesus heals the centurion’s servant.
Jesus raises the widow’s son from the dead.
Yet the disciples were afraid of the storm.
Note: These disciples were doing what they were supposed to do, living like they were supposed to live, following the direction of Jesus, and they still encountered a storm.
“The presence of a storm doesn’t necessarily mean you missed God. Sometimes the storm is simply part of the journey to where God told you He was taking you.”
The question today isn’t if you’ve been through a storm. Have you ever felt like Jesus took time off in the middle of the storm? You know God is there but you are fighting with wanting to understand why God told you to step into the boat in the first place.
The disciples woke Jesus up because they were afraid they were going to die. “Master, master, we perish.”
“One of the greatest tests of our faith isn’t when Jesus says no. It’s when Jesus doesn’t seem to say anything at all.”
Jesus being silent does not mean Jesus is absent.
Jesus being still does not mean Jesus is powerless.
Jesus being asleep does not mean
Jesus doesn’t care.
Psalm 46:1
God is not the present help after time of trouble but in time of trouble.
Isaiah 43:2
“The presence of trouble is not proof of the absence of God.”
In the storm is when our faith is a activated because we have to trust His presence without seeing His activity.
Hebrews 11:1 KJV
If Jesus is in the boat, the story isn’t over.
Jesus knew it was only a chapter.
They saw water. Jesus saw the other side.
They saw the storm. Jesus saw the destination.
They saw the problem. Jesus knew the promise.
“The storm does not cancel the promise. The wind doesn’t cancel the Word. The waves don’t cancel what Jesus said.”
Don’t walk away because you don’t understand what God is doing. Stay in the boat.
Stay in the boat!
